Welcome! I’m so excited that you’re here, considering embarking on a continued Lab adventure!
In Lab SELVES, we explore and develop your relationship with yourself. We use our creative toolbox to consider varied aspects and facets of yourself and your life.
As we journey deeper into the core of the “life labyrinth” – who you are and what YOU want to create and experience – you’ll apply Lab principles and skills to your real life and goals.
You’ll be encouraged to identify 1-3 bold goals you have for yourself/your life—or areas in which you’d like to venture boldly forward—to focus on throughout the course. These goals can be a particular project or career initiative, like “make new friends” or “work towards a new job,” or they can be more general, like “keep trying new things” or “be open.” (These are just examples.)
Don’t worry if you don’t have any specific goals or changes you want to make. We’ve had people take Lab SELVES just because they want to keep going with The Lab, and they’ve had a GREAT experience. This course is accessible to people with and without specific goals.
As in all modules of The Lab, this module will further your journey to:
The Lab SELVES is for you if you:
- Want to continue your Lab journey – for the growth, for the fun, for the connection and community – for any reason at all!
- Want to deepen applications of the foundational concepts and skills you’ve learned in The Lab directly to your relationship with yourself, different parts of your life, and/or your goals.
- Are looking for a totally different, “non-thinky” way to explore things you’ve probably thought about a LOT already, regarding yourself, your life, and your goals – so you can find new insights and pathways!
- Are excited to further develop your creative practice.
- Want to play with your art tools in new ways, and learn and practice new improv exercises, and try out new real-world experiments.
- Want to deepen your relationships with fellow Labbers and/or also get to know people from other Foundations cohorts.
Lab SELVES uses the lightness, playfulness, fun, and transforming & balancing effects of art, improv, and nomad-inspired experiments and the principles we’ve learned…
to grow your relationship with yourself, directly explore aspects of your life, and help you venture boldly forward in whatever ways you want to.
In 8 Weeks, You Will Continue To Grow Your Ability to…
You’ll develop the only relationship you’re guaranteed to have for your entire life:
your relationship with yourself.
Put simply: SELVES is more of the same awesomeness of The Lab plus in-class exercises to help you apply the concepts and skills directly to any particular aspect(s) of your life that you choose. Let’s use our tools to venture boldly forward to create, achieve, contribute, and experience more of what we want!
What’s Included in Your Enrollment
You’ll be well-supported in Lab SELVES – with tools to immerse you in learning and growth in and out of class sessions!
“I found that the creative prompts and exercises in this module of The Lab really helped me explore parts of myself and do some introspection and deepen my relationship with myself in ways that were really fun. A lot of the visual exercises added fun and lightness to explorations that could have been more challenging if they were done in a different way. I found myself taking on experiments that might have just been a passing thought otherwise, but I took the time to acknowledge my ideas and reflect on them and put some of them into action and that felt really great. And I was able to do it really almost effortlessly and with a lot of enjoyment, having had the foundation of the first part.” – Natasha, visual artist

Your relationship with yourself is the one relationship you are guaranteed to have your whole life long.
This module is all about that relationship – and about approaching your life and your goals with respect, passion, compassion, and love.
If you feel like you are your own worst critic, learning to be your own biggest cheerleader is a game-changing shift. The tools we use in The Lab can help make that shift happen.
If you already have a pretty great relationship with yourself, I feel confident that you’ll still get a lot out of this module, as you look at yourself and your life in new ways – in the magic of Lab community.
Together, we’ll keep building our “Lab muscles” and have a lot of fun using them to explore various aspects of our lives through new lenses.
We’ll use our tools to venture boldly forward in our lives!
The Toolkit (AKA How the “Lab Magic” Happens)
- Visual Art
- Improvisation
- Real-World Experiments
- Discussions
- Reflective Prompts
- Community
- The Sum of All These Parts!
In SELVES, we use our visual arts materials as tools to help us explore different areas of our lives, experiment with new ways of looking at ourselves, and work with our goals and what matters to us in a whole new way.
Along the way, we continue to develop our relationships with ourselves and build the “muscles” we want to bring into our lives. Just as they did in FOUNDATIONS, the art exercises will help you loosen up, reduce perfectionism, get in touch with your intuition, gain clarity, experience more play and novelty, increase authenticity, and more!
While SELVES is not an art class, most people find it deepens and expands their creative practice, and many find their art skills growing just through doing the exercises. Those with already-robust art practices tend to find SELVES helps them to use their art tools in new ways, and to strengthen the connection between art-making and life.
In Lab SELVES, we’ll use the core improv principles and skills you learned in FOUNDATIONS to develop our relationships with ourselves and our goals.
New exercises will help you continue to develop your skills and gain new connections and insights. Since you already have a foundation, we have the opportunity to experiment with slightly more advanced exercises.
Don’t worry, though – just like in FOUNDATIONS, the improv exercises are carefully designed to be zero-performance, introvert-and-extrovert-friendly, and accessible to all layers of experience.
Continuing to play with improvisation as a tool will help you feel more and more confident thinking on your feet, putting yourself out there, being present, taking positive risks, and more!
In class, you’ll practice with concepts and skills that can help you build your relationship with yourself and gain insight on your life and goals. Then, you get to immediately put them into practice in your life – in bite-size, low-risk, just-right-for-you ways.
Each week, you’ll have a menu of optional homework assignments and real-world experiments to help you apply what you’re learning to your real life! You’ll be amazed at how quickly your learning trickles out into so many areas of your real world.
Since you’ve already experienced Foundations, you know about the amazing ahas happen when you hear how your classmates are connecting to the principles and applying them to their lives!
Because each cohort is limited to 12 people, no one gets lost in the crowd. There is space for all voices to be heard. Sharing is always optional, and our camera-on, settled-in-place norms mean that each member is fully part of each group moment, whether verbally or quietly!
While so much of our discovery happens in connection and group interaction, we learn best when we also have time to reflect individually and privately.
Both in and out of class, you’ll have guided opportunities to reflect on, and “connect the dots” in your learning. While you’ll have many opportunities to share your independent reflections and discoveries, you’ll never be required to. It’s always your decision. This allows for you to explore courageously, and safely!
You already know that the community of The Lab is incredible. It’s the extra-special, not-so-secret ingredient that takes everything you learn in class to the next level.
A quick note about the community and connection aspect of continuing in The Lab with additional modules: It’s so cool the way connections from your original cohort deepen over time, and also how getting to know new people from other original cohorts enhances your overall Lab experience!
Those who have done multiple modules report that they could never have imagined how strong these connections would become.
Especially in an increasingly automated, isolated world, this face-to-face connection and analog creating can help you ground yourself, develop skills that are vital in this world, and hang on to what makes us human.
All of these elements work together to create a transformational experience that many alumni call the “Lab Magic”!
